JP Conte’s Focused Giving in a Record Year for U.S. Philanthropy

Americans gave more to charity in 2024 than in any prior year. Against that backdrop, JP Conte’s approach stands out for its focus. He concentrates on a few causes rather than spreading across many.

Charitable giving in the United States reached $592.5 billion in 2024, according to the Giving USA annual report, and individuals provided the largest share. JP Conte, the founder and managing partner of the family office Lupine Crest Capital, works through the J-P Conte Family Foundation, which he began in 2017.

A Record Year for Giving

The Giving USA figures point to a strong year for donations, lifted in part by gains in the stock market. Totals that big come from millions of donors and a wide range of causes across the country.

Within that broad total, individual donors again accounted for most of the money. Large individual gifts to specific institutions make up a real part of the picture, and Jean-Pierre Conte’s giving follows the same route.

Concentration Over Breadth

Conte has chosen depth instead of range. His foundation focuses on education, medical research and conservation, and he backs a limited set of organizations he can support closely rather than making many small grants. That focus lets him follow the work and judge its results.

His largest commitments show the pattern, from a $25 million gift to Colgate University to endowed medical research at the University of California, San Francisco. Each one targets a single institution he knows well rather than dozens he doesn’t, and each is large enough to make a real difference where it lands.

Following the Money He Gives

Focus lets a donor stay involved. Conte weighs an organization’s capacity and leadership before he commits, and then he keeps watching how a gift performs, much the way he evaluated companies over a long investing career. A shorter list is simply easier to follow with that kind of care.

That hands-on style is hard to sustain across a scattered roster of grants. Conte would rather know a handful of organizations deeply than send token amounts to many, so his attention and his money travel together. In a year when giving hit new highs, JP Conte kept his own philanthropy pointed at a few areas he could support closely. Spread too thin, he believes, even a record sum loses its bite; kept focused, a smaller commitment can move a cause he cares about. For Conte, that trade is worth making.
